Charlie & Emily

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Jane and I had a wonderful time photographing the wedding events of Charlie and Emily at the Hay Adams and Meridian House in Washington, DC. We had a lot of fun getting to know this fantastic couple and appreciated their good taste and fun colors. Hats off to the amazing Aimee Dominick and her team at A Dominick Events who always provide beautiful, well-run events. We wish you all only the very best!

Jamie & Vaughan

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

It was a stunning day in September- summer kissed with fall. I had a great time photographing Jamie and Vaughan, who traveled to Crozet from Richmond. We started the photo shoot in a local coffee shop and then stopped by an apple orchard, vineyard, and a beautiful field. I was happy to see that they brought their dogs, which gave me more insight into this great couple. It turns out that Jamie and Vaughan have apples as a theme for their wedding and I didn’t know this until I took them to the orchard. I love having the opportunity to spend time with couples before the wedding. It is such a great opportunity to get to know them and always makes for a fantastic experience on the wedding day. You guys were lots of fun and I can’t wait to see you again.

Times are tough

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Just kidding. We are blessed to have 4 amazing children and I couldn’t resist sharing a few photos today. Jane cuts all the boy’s hair and I had to bring out the camera to document one of Ethan’s haircuts. Ethan is our third child, second boy. Before choosing a name for any of our children, we always searched out the name’s meaning. His name means firm and strong. As we continued to have children, and as they continued to grow, we quickly found that their personalities matched their name. I’m not sure if they grew into their name or their name grew into them, but in any case, Ethan is a great child. He is so loving and expressive, and we always know what he is thinking. He is also very determined. We pray that will be to his advantage as he tackles the challenges of this world. Here are a few of my favorites!

Appalachian Trail feature in Virginia Living

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Hot off the press! I spent two nights in the woods of Grayson Highlands State Park and Mount Rogers National Recreation Area this past July. Just after a cold front moved across the east, I knew that humidity would drop and visibility would be amazing. Take a look at the spreads from the October issue of Virginia Living and a few more of my favorite images. The people that helped me make some of these great images appear below. I first had the pleasure of meeting Ron Beurteaux from Australia, a 70 year old man hiking the Virginia section of the AT. If you get a chance to read the article in VL, you will find him to be the central character. Interestingly, Ron shared that the Mount Rogers area was the most beautiful of all areas that he had experienced on the AT. I later met some day hikers who didn’t want to share their names, but willingly allowed me to take a photograph of themselves and their dog. I had a lot of fun meeting Earl and his family, who were taking a break from horseback riding. I was amused to see them pull out sodas from the chilled saddle bags on their horses. I thought that was a neat way to bring drinks on the trail. Earl happily gave me a Pepsi, which he said would help lighten the load on the way down. I think he meant for the horse, not me, and I eagerly indulged in this AT delicacy! As I continued to hike, I met Ed, a volunteer for the National Park Service. I think we crossed paths about four times that day. Finally the three folks together are Heman, Diana and Brynna – great people who hiked with me several miles and were kind enough to feed me. Believe it or not, I forgot food that day, so all I had was a small bag of pretzels. Thanks for the food guys; it was a life saver! I loved all the wild horses roaming around. I suppose they can’t read the sign that says they are not allowed. Oh yea, and I couldn’t leave out the close up photo of black bear poop. How often does that chance come along?
