Secret confession of a doughnut lover
Wednesday, April 29th, 2009I had to go to a town to photograph a future magazine feature. This town has several farms that make maple syrup from all the maple trees in the area. The local Ruritan Club was raising money by selling maple doughnuts. Now these people are serious about selling doughnuts. The Ruritans have their very own trailer where they manufacture all their doughnuts. I went inside and these people were working hard. The entire process starts on one end of the trailer where all the raw ingredients come together. In the middle of the trailer is where the doughnuts are cut into shape and the center removed. From there the doughnuts get deep fried and then glazed as you move down to the opposite side of where it all began. At the very end is the window where the doughnuts are sold. The line just to buy these things was anywhere from 30 to 50 yards long and at times individual customers were buying 8 to 12 dozen! So, as a photographer, I thought that having a photo of one doughnut would be nice. Personally I feel that doughnuts are kind of like one of those pinwheels. Sure they are cute and fun, but really what use are they? Doughnuts make me feel the same way. I am glad to know they exist, but you will never see me with one. Along comes the punch line to this story. Knowing my wife Jane, you might know that she feeds on doughnuts. Yes, I said feeds on them, much like sea mammals do on plankton. Jane knows doughnuts! She knows them so well that by the time all of our children could ride in the buggy at the grocery store, every child was saying doughnut or waving their arms in the direction of the pastry section. Once I was done photographing this maple doughnut, I thought I would be a nice guy and toss it to the wife. What the heck, it might get me some points with the little woman if I threw her this small town, trailer made doughnut. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, that’s why I have included the images below. I do believe you will understand everything Jane thought about this small town doughnut in these images.
She receives the doughnut.

She anticipates eating the doughnut.

She bites the doughnut.

She licks the glaze off her lips from the doughnut.

She revels in the satisfaction of a delicious doughnut!
